Backbone Mountain, Maryland (3,360')

26 November 2002

Rick and I at the summit, and me at the survey marker

A muddy hike up a logging road leads to a small rocky ridge with a 1910 survey marker on the West Virginia border. Following the ridge a little further north brings one to Hoye Crest, which is the summit of Backbone Mountain. A snow and ice storm was passing through that day, and everything had that peaceful feel of nature during a storm. This despite the fact that deer season in western Maryland sounds like the Battle of the Somme.
