Eagle Mountain, Minnesota (2,301')

20 October 2001

The hike up Eagle Mountain is a pleasant 3.5 mile trek through the Superior National Forest and into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The trail is strewn with small rocks and boulders, and is flat and level as it winds through a birch and pine forest to Whale Lake. The lake offers very nice views of both Eagle Mountain and an adjacent, unnamed peak. Shortly after rounding Whale Lake, the trail heads uphill for a short stretch, past several impressive overlooks to the summit.

The entire area is a outdoor paradise, and the hike up Eagle Mountain was the climax to a weekend of hiking and camping across the area. The drive along the North Shore consisted of one state park after another, all of them with great hiking and amazing views. The highlight by far was the Baptism River High Falls in Tettegouche State Park, Minnesota's rival to Yosemite. It is one of those few perfect places on Earth, where sun and water and forest and rock come together to form a beautiful paradise. And no true adventurer will pass on the opportunity to scramble up the rock cliff next to the falls.

The hike to Lookout Mountain in Cascade River State Park is also very nice, and the view from the top is incredible.
