Taum Sauk Mountain, Missouri (1,772')

18 December 2001

Taum Sauk Mountain is the tallest of Missouri's Ozarks, but you can drive most of the way to the summit. From the parking lot, a paved trail leads about 300' to a boulder and a sign marking the highpoint.

A 3 mile roundtrip hike takes you from the summit to the Mina Sauk Falls, the highest waterfall in the state. The area around the falls is great for scrambling around on rocks, and although it's a wet-weather waterfall, there was plenty of water when we were there on an unseaonsably warm day in late December. Johnson Shut-ins State Park is just a few miles away -- there's a 10 mile trail between the two parks that I wish we had time to hike. And the even more interesting Elephant Rocks State Park is nearby as well.
