Spruce Knob, West Virginia (4,863')

Rick on the trail near the summit

Spruce Knob was the first highpoint on the drive back to Illinois from Baltimore. It's a longer trip from I-81 than it looks, thanks to slow winding roads. It's an enjoyable drive, for the most part, although the actual road up Spruce Knob is marred with potholes and rocks.

A small observation tower is on the summit, and a short trail leads through the nearby woods to an overlook of the neighboring valley.
