September 11 did not change everything.
To hear our president tell it, September 11 changed everything. But the president is not telling the truth.
It did not change our respect for the law, and our dedication to civil liberties.
- Our president's re-election campaign has funded, through the Republican National Committee, "voter drives" that systematically shred registrations from the opposing political party.
- The administration has claimed the right to detain American citizens on American soil, indefinitely, without writ of habeas corpus, without access to the courts or the right to counsel, on the suspicion that they might be thinking about committing a crime.
- Teachers in Oregon were arrested when they arrived at a campaign rally for President Bush, for wearing shirts that said "Protect our civil liberties". The president's re-election campaign claimed that the shirts were "obscene".
It did not change our faith in Christian chivalry.
-
A Republican senator from Oklahoma compared the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay to a fraternity prank, and claimed to be outraged "at the outrage". He serves at the chairman for the president's re-election campaign in Oklahoma.
-
The Repubilcan candidate for the Senate from the same state has called for the execution of doctors who perform abortions, and has been accused of sterilizing a 20-year old mother without her consent.
-
The Spectacularly Reverend Jerry Falwell, appearing on national TV in support of the President's re-election, has expressed his desire to "blow [the Iraqis] away in the name of the Lord".
It did not change our commitment to forming a more perfect Union.
-
Our president's re-election campaign focuses on insulting the citizens of New England, in order to curry favor with citizens in the South.
-
Our president favors enshrining bigotry into our Constitution, which until now has given voice not to our ignoble prejudices, but to our noblest beliefs.
-
Our president's economic policies have resulted in the greatest income inequality since 1928.
-
Our president's economic policies have turned a record treasury surplus into a record deficit.
-
Our president's economic policies have resulted in a loss of millions of jobs, making his administration the first since the Great Depression to oversee a net loss of jobs.
-
Our president's economic policies have left 45 million Americans without access to health care.
-
Our president's economic policies have left 13 million American children living in poverty.
-
Our president's economic policies have given an average tax cut of $53,123 to the wealthiest 1% of Americans, who have an average income of $1,117,000. The money given to the top 1% accounted for 37.6% of the total tax cut.
-
Our president's economic policies have given an average tax cut of $66 to the bottom 20%, who have an average income of $9,300. The money given to the bottom 20% accounted for 0.9% of the total tax cut.
It did not change our belief in the Enlightenment, and the supremacy of reason.
-
Our president's administration was charged by 48 Nobel laureates with systematically "ignoring unbiased scientific advice in the policy making that is so important to our collective welfare".
-
Our president, according to members of the Reagan administration, and the first Bush administration, "dispenses with people who confront him with inconvenient facts. He truly believes he's on a mission from God. Absolute faith like that overwhelms the need for analysis".
It did not change what Thomas Jefferson called "a decent respect to the opinions of mankind".
-
Our president's re-election campaign has focused on insulting his opponent for believing in friendship and cooperation.
- Our president's diplomacy and foreign policies have been so contrary to the common beliefs of Western civilization, that most people in the Western world believe that the United States is a threat to world justice and peace.
It did not absolve us of our nation's original sin.
-
Our president's re-election campaign in Michigan has expressed its desire to "suppress the Detroit vote".
- Thousands of blacks in Florida have been systematically disenfranchised via erroneous "felon lists" at the direction of the president's brother. His secretary of state was rewarded for her efforts with a seat in the House of Representatives.
- Academic studies have suggested that the votes of one million blacks were not counted in the last election.
It did not change our ability to take back our country on November 2.
Let America be America again.
